In 3 days' time we will travel to Ohio to visit our sweet little pixie great grand daughter and bring her and her mother home with us for a week's visit. She's a precious 2-year old who loves to do whatever the grown-up people are doing! She wants to clean, to do the dishes, to scrub the tables and the floors with a wet cloth, to sweep the porch, fold the laundry; to play the concertina, the harp, the piano. Whatever we're doing, she thinks she should be doing it, as well. No toys for her! She craves to use the smart phone or the laptop computer! What a fascinating age we live in! Children don't see photos on paper, they're all digital! Of course, we think she's exceptionally smart, but I suppose most babies surprise their families with how fast they learn!
Computer age files: We have boxes of old photos from the 1800's to the 21st century, passed down from past generations, all needing to be categorized and labeled. Now we almost never look at them, we have them in digital format and saved on the computer. Now, when I visit my mother in the Health Care Center, I show her recent photos of family, and all are saved on my Smart phone.
Laura's Word is dedicated to Laura's many interests, including Scottish, Celtic and jazz music, Celtic harp, fiddle, piano, guitar, concertina, composing, sewing, vintage fabrics, knitting, water color painting, English history, European travel, holistic health care

January update and projects
Thursday and I'm planning to find fabric in pink floral roses to make slip-covers for my living room chair and sofa. I expect to find a lovely vintage look at Hobby Lobby, possibly tomorrow. I've always loved the Cottage Look with floral designs and china, but also the English Manor House Look with bold red tapestries and rugs. Since I already possess some of each, I will have to merge these two designs! The last couple of weeks, I knitted 4 hats: 1 for Maureen and 3 others, I suppose, for myself. I love wearing hats even indoors.
I have several pieces of furniture that have been "passed down" to me from Gram and Mom, and they don't actually match, but I don't like everything to match. I'd rather look like a gift shop. My mother frequented her local antique shop and acquired a beautiful set of pink rose china plates, also white plates with gold trim. I have vintage cups and mugs with rose décor. I have Mom's small collection of old silverware and I use the real silver. After keeping it in a closet for years and only getting it out on New Year's Day, I decided I wanted to enjoy it every day!
I have Mom's collection of English tea cups, 2 Russian teacups. The tea always tastes better!

New Year
January 6, 2014, 12 inches of snow. Yesterday, it snowed all day, but the temps were not bad, at all, so we were outdoors, shoveling and building a snowman. The below zero temps came after dark and the wind created snow drifts that built up against the back door! The sun is shining today even tho we now have -20 Fahrenheit. New Year's Eve was super fun. On the 30th, I got a call to play 40s style piano at a private party of 300 guests downtown Indy. The location was a wedding venue in a restored old church building. The theme was New Year's Eve, 1943, and a murder mystery party.
Throughout the evening, actors portrayed scenes from the story and the guests were invited to solve
the murder. The winner won a free use of the venue for a party of 30. The music was great from a local DJ, MY piano music and songs were in the side room, the cocktail lounge, while the DJ and dancing were in the very large ballroom. I met a couple of new friends. I have plans now for learning Gaelic, learning more tunes, working on other instruments, and trips to OSAS, while also visiting family on the West Coast. Looking forward to Spring.
